South Fork of the Boise River

Tim Morgan gets a little sideways as he enters Raspberry rapid, the only class IV rapid on the South Fork of the Boise River which is located between Anderson Ranch Dam and Arrowrock Reservoir North of Mountain Home.

The 16 mile float starts out with 3 miles of calm water before entering a beautiful canyon where the waves begin. Depending on the flow there can be several rapids in the next 5 miles. Look for 3 burnt trees on the left. This marks Raspberry rapid and is an excellent spot to stop and scout. The last 8 miles is constant class II and III rapids with an occasional log thrown in just to keep you busy.

In normal years the river flows at 1600 cfs for about 6 weeks in July and August. However, 1997 is a record water year and the South Fork is running at 3000 cfs which is an excellent flow. I highly recommend anyone take time to run this river at this level.
