IWA Christmas Party was a resounding success. If you weren’t there, YOU MISSED OUT!!! As usual Stan and Jo at Idaho River Sports were not only gracious hosts serving us lots of great food (helped by contributions from Bronwyn Meyers and Madonna Lengerich), but played Santa with great presents that included throw ropes, rescue kits, life jacket, hats, mugs and kayak rentals. Of course, there were the usual battles over the gift exchange. Luckily, no one came to serious blows as prizes became “off-limits” after the third claim.
President Mike Cooper narrated a “Power Point” slide show on a mid-summer trip to Alaska down the Tatshenshini. Mike, his wife Shelley and IWA members John Strange, Chuck and Paula Gossett, Jim and Evelyn Camp, Dave Lindsey, as well as non-members, but really good folks, Pat Leaner and Ed Ford made the adventure. The gang arrived at Haines, Alaska on July 4 by either plane or the Alaskan Ferry system for a ten (10) day trip. The river took them through alpine forest and marshes, highly braided river channels, awesome scenery that included icebergs, hanging glaciers and snow capped peaks and ended in Dry Bay, Alaska where they luckily found the airfield from which they were flown to either Yakutat or Haines for a return trip home. See the November Eddy Line for more details. Mike’s full article tells the whole story.
January Meeting:
You won’t want to miss the NEXT Meeting Wednesday January 9, 2002,

IRU Update on What is Affecting Your Rivers. See CALENDAR OF EVENTS.
Notes From The Pres:
Mike Cooper, our illustrious President is bailing out on us in April.
He claims that Jeri Rose, the current Vice President is more than qualified
to lead a bunch of ruffians like the IWA members, especially since she
is married to long-time IWA member, and Tatshenshini Adventurer John Strange.
Mike claims that he has accomplished what he set out to do. The rest
of us think that he has done such a good job that he should be “held prisoner”
for another year. Alas, he refuses. So Ms. Rose says that she
is willing to continue her commitment to IWA and if re-elected to the Board,
will be willing to tackle the upcoming year. Of course, she has a
real boost since we will have water for boating this year and Mike had
to see us through the drought. Oh well. There is a list of
the rest of the Board members at the back. Some of them might be
prevailed upon to continue. Or, perhaps some of the members want
to tackle the Board positions. We will feature one or more of these
redoubtable folks in future issues so you know who it is that comes up
with these cockamamie ideas for fun in the off season.
February Potluck and Snow Info:
Join us at Maravia/Cascade Outfitters on February 6 and Find
Out About Dutch Oven Wizardry from Sheila Mills and Picking, Caring For
and Packing Dutch Ovens from Lesser-Knowns Denny Mooney and Susan Wildwood.
Get the Straight Scoop About our Snow Pack and Upcoming Water Year!
Where you need to go: 604 E. 45th, Garden City.
What you need to do is:
BRING: a dish to share for ten or more people. Please
have it ready to cook upon arrival. Please no assembly on site. The
Board will already be making a mess of things pretending they are helping
Sheila.
BRING: Your eating stuff, you know, utensils AND plates.
Get ready for great hints on what to purchase, how to care
for and pack those heavy dutches.
Famous Author Sheila Mills (THE OUTDOOR DUTCH OVEN COOKBOOK), and
co-owner of Rocky Mountain River Tours of Stanley Idaho (she lets Dave
take some of the credit) will demonstrate assembly; discuss preparation
and SHARE samples of really great entrees.
The Board has authorized spending your hard earned cash on
briquettes, salad and perhaps some other stuff.
Ron Abramovich of USDA, water supply specialist, snow survey
data collection office has been commandeered, bullied and otherwise pressured
into telling us the real scoop on the snow pack, water content and will
have us dreaming of white water before the evening is over.

Money Talks:
Treasurer, Mel Johnson reports that we seem to be holding our own
in spite of the recent downturn in the market. Probably because
we aren’t in the market. So don’t worry about our stock falling.
We got really adventurous and put some of the money in Certificates of
Deposit where they earn a whopping 3.102% and 2.65%. Rest assured,
this is still better than what banks are paying on regular savings or checking
accounts. Here’s where we’re sitting, money-wise:
Savings: $665.00
Checking: $268.61
CDs $7,000.00
The Board is considering how to best utilize our funds to assist on river issues. Ideas are always welcome. Please send your comments and we will consider, publish, etc.
Membership, Dues and Other Funkie
Stuff:
IWA Secretary Susan Wildwood reports that our membership has soared
to ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY ONE. Of course that actually includes some
freebee Eddy Lines that we send off to the government agencies that one
or more of us have to deal with – Forest Service, Idaho Parks and Recreation,
and various departments of Idaho Government. Wildwood has been known
to accost perfect (or imperfect) strangers at various functions to demand
money and membership applications. She is asking that EVERYBODY,
including you, think about when you joined the association. OK, so
we are all old, she reported, just pretend like you can still remember
back that far and make a stab. She insists that you should make a
guess or at least lie to her on your next renewal form so that she can
get every one of the blanks filled out on her Access Table showing membership.
Please humor her! Dues are still the best bargain around -
$15 whether individual, family, business or ? Membership. YOUR DUES
are due starting in January. If you don’t know if you are caught
up, call Susan at 383-0390 and she will be able to tell you if you are
behind or ahead.
Gear for Sale
We will be using a portion, IN THE FUTURE, for gear that Members
Only might have available. Right now we are asking that you save
the gear for the May Used Equipment Sale. After that we will be happy
to list gear that Members have available to trade, sell, etc. etc.
Look for this spot in the future.
River Trips and Tips
PLEASE, PLEASE, send your information so that we can list interesting
trips you have taken, stories to share, and just plain Tall Tales and gossip
if you want. We will review, reject if entirely unbelievable but
otherwise consider all your submissions. After all, you can tell
that we can’t think up something new everytime!
